10 Charities to Donate to During Mental Health Awareness Month and Beyond

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we would like to take this opportunity to highlight some incredible nonprofit organizations that are advocating for the importance of mental health and wellness. Here is a list of 10 organizations to donate to this month (and year-round).

1N5

1N5 is an organization that seeks to prevent suicide by erasing the stigma of mental illness and promoting optimal mental wellbeing. They achieve this mission through education and stigma reduction, community engagement, policy and advocacy, and measurement and data work. The Shop + Stop the Stigma campaign is run by 1N5 and all proceeds go directly to their organization.

Buddy Project

The Buddy Project is a nonprofit movement that aims to prevent suicide and self-harm by pairing people as buddies and raising awareness for mental health. They hope to promote empathy, compassion, and awareness of mental health issues, and combat isolation and loneliness through their buddy pairing system. The Buddy Project campaigns are run by the organization themselves and all funds raised help them continue their efforts.

The Trevor Project

The Trevor Project provides information and support for LGBTQ young people 24/7, all year long. They believe that all LGBTQ youth deserve a welcoming, loving world, and they are dedicated to making that a reality. The Asian Mental Health Collective seeks to normalize and de-stigmatize mental health within the Asian community. They aspire to make mental health easily available, approachable, and accessible to Asian communities worldwide. The Celebrate Mental Health campaign was designed by Elisha-Rio Apilado for the Asian Mental Health Collective. All proceeds go directly to the organization.

Brain & Behavior Research Foundation

The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is committed to alleviating the suffering caused by mental illness by awarding grants that will lead to advances and breakthroughs in scientific research. They work to make discoveries in understanding the causes and improving the treatments of mental disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, autism, and bipolar, attention-deficit hyperactivity, post-traumatic stress, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. The Mental Health Matters campaign was created by Lotus Paper Co. to benefit the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation.

Florida Mental Health Counselors Association

The Florida Mental Health Counselors Association strives to advance the profession of clinical mental health counseling through intentional and strength-based advocacy, networking, professional development, legislative efforts,  public education, and the promotion of positive mental health for their communities. The FMHCA Official Campaigns on Bonfire are run by the organization themselves and all proceeds benefit the work that they do.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. They are dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. The organization’s core strategies are funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide. The “Your Life Matters;” campaign was created by Bonfire seller, Emma Rossman to raise awareness and benefit The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

NAMI

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. They provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. The Normalize Therapy campaign was started by Bonfire seller, Britkneebuys. 10% of the proceeds go to NAMI.

The Jed Foundation

The Jed Foundation is a nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for our nation’s teens and young adults, giving them the skills and support they need to thrive today…and tomorrow. They aim to shift the culture and conversation around mental health by focusing on two components to change and save lives: strengthening the emotional health of teens and young adults so they can thrive, and preventing substance misuse, self-harm, and suicide as a result of emotional distress. The Men Need Therapy Too campaign was started by Bonfire seller, Jenna Bailey to spread the message that no matter someone’s gender – everyone needs mental health help sometimes. 100% of the proceeds go directly to The Jed Foundation.
